Testing Coal-Based Activated Carbon for Industrial Wastewater Polishing

Activated Carbon buying guide · Coal-Based Activated Carbon

A wastewater polishing trial should measure whether coal-based carbon meets a defined outlet limit. Use representative effluent and record changes in feed quality, dose or flow during the test.

Make the sample representative

Collect water after the upstream treatment steps that will remain in service. Record suspended solids, pH and the relevant organic indicators. Include a difficult production period if the stream changes with product batches; one convenient grab sample may hide the real duty.

Measure more than a percentage

For a powder trial, record dose, mixing time and separation method. For a granular-bed trial, record flow and cumulative water treated. Compare outlet concentration with the actual acceptance criterion. If carbon loses effectiveness quickly, investigate competing substances and upstream loading before increasing the purchase volume.

What to record before approval

  • Use the intended feed point and representative operating water.
  • Record outlet measurements against the project target.
  • Document solids handling, pressure behavior and consumption alongside results.

For the matching product family, see Coal-Based Activated Carbon. The Technical Library provides additional document checklists. Share the intended use and the proposed acceptance method when requesting a sample or quotation.

Separate wastewater variability from media performance

Collect trial water from the stage where carbon will actually be installed. A sample taken before biological treatment or solids removal may give a misleading picture of a polishing duty. Record the relevant inlet and outlet measurements alongside sampling time, flow and any upstream process change; composite and spot samples answer different questions.

Keep a control or existing-media comparison where practical. If the inlet changes during the run, review those periods separately rather than combining them into one average removal figure. For a bulk carbon purchase, the useful result is a documented operating window and a repeatable acceptance method, not an isolated laboratory result.

Order the tested coal-carbon form

Keep inlet and outlet results with the trial conditions. Use that record to set the purchase specification and plan a plant trial; changes in effluent composition may require a new assessment.
