Coal-Based Carbon: Choosing Granules, Pellets or Powder for Your Process

Activated Carbon buying guide · Coal-Based Activated Carbon

Coal-based activated carbon comes as granules, pellets and powder. Each form needs a different contact and handling arrangement. Choose the form that fits the filter bed or dosing system before comparing grades.

Start with the equipment

A fixed-bed vessel needs a media size that suits its retainers and operating flow. A dosing process needs a powder that can be fed, dispersed and removed downstream. For gas treatment, evaluate the proposed pellet or granular grade against the bed geometry rather than choosing by photograph.

Compare useful evidence

Ask for the offered grade’s size distribution, moisture and bulk density, then request application-relevant adsorption data. A larger iodine number is not a substitute for testing the target stream. Keep flow, inlet composition and trial duration consistent when comparing candidates.

What to record before approval

  • Identify whether carbon stays in a bed or is dosed into the process.
  • Confirm media retention or downstream solids removal before ordering.
  • Compare the same operating duty, not only the cost per kilogram.

For the matching product family, see Coal-Based Activated Carbon. The Technical Library provides additional document checklists. Share the intended use and the proposed acceptance method when requesting a sample or quotation.

Compare the complete carbon-handling arrangement

A granule or pellet is normally evaluated as retained media, while a powder trial also needs a dosing and solids-separation plan. Before asking for equivalent quotations, describe the vessel or contact tank, the available media support and the equipment used to unload spent carbon. A purchase that fits the process is easier to compare than three prices for unrelated physical forms.

Include loading losses, rinsing or conditioning, operating checks and disposal arrangements in the comparison. Where an existing grade is being replaced, retain a reference sample and record its current duty. This makes it possible to distinguish a change in carbon form from a change in inlet quality or operating practice.

Order the tested coal-carbon form

Specify the carbon form, particle range, quantity and packing in the purchase order. Attach the accepted sample reference and receiving checks so repeat deliveries can be assessed against the same specification.
