Acid-Washed Carbon for Process Liquids: Designing an Extractables Review

Activated Carbon buying guide · Acid-Washed Activated Carbon

An extractables test is most useful when its conditions reflect the process liquid and carbon contact. Review the extraction medium, temperature and duration before comparing results.

Agree the test conditions

Define the contacting liquid, time, temperature and the analytes of concern with the quality team. Identify the offered acid-washed grade and sample batch. Ask how the supplier’s existing data relates to that protocol rather than assuming all extractables reports use the same conditions.

Evaluate the treated product

Include the required product-quality measurements after contact and separation. Record the carbon dose or bed arrangement and retain a baseline from the untreated liquid. If the results are inconsistent, review sampling and extraction methods before attributing the difference to a washing process.

What to record before approval

  • Align extraction conditions with the intended process.
  • Retain untreated-liquid and carbon reference samples.
  • Connect the report to the actual offered grade.

For the matching product family, see Acid-Washed Activated Carbon. The Technical Library provides additional document checklists. Share the intended use and the proposed acceptance method when requesting a sample or quotation.

Choose extraction conditions that reflect use

Describe the process liquid, contact duration and relevant temperature or chemistry in the extractables review. Decide whether the test is intended to screen candidate grades or support a formal acceptance requirement. Record the untreated-liquid reference and the handling steps so contamination introduced during testing is not confused with a carbon contribution.

If the result raises a concern, review sample preparation and repeatability before changing the supply specification. Keep laboratory findings linked to the tested acid-washed grade and batch. A result obtained under one extraction condition should not be presented as universal proof of purity for every process liquid.

Attach the purity requirement to the grade

State the receiving process and the specific purity or extractables requirement when requesting acid-washed carbon. Keep the supporting test method and sample identity in the approval record. Washing terminology should describe the offered product, while documented acceptance checks address the actual requirement of the process.
