A coconut-shell carbon specification for water filters needs the particle size, flow conditions and target contaminants. For cartridges, include the retention screens and filling arrangement; for bulk beds, include vessel dimensions and operating flow.

Define what the filter must do

Identify the inlet water and the outlet objective. Taste-and-odor control, an organic contaminant target and a specialist process-water duty should not be treated as the same trial. State the contact arrangement and the amount of water the evaluation will treat.

Approve the exact supplied grade

Request the particle range, relevant adsorption data and mechanical-property information for the proposed grade. Review any certification or test report against its product scope; evidence for a different carbon or assembled filter cannot simply be transferred. Keep a reference sample for later batch comparisons.

Check the filter vessel before comparing coconut-shell grades

List the vessel dimensions, media depth, screen or nozzle openings and permitted operating flow. Compare the offered particle-size distribution with those constraints, including the fine fraction rather than only the nominal mesh range. Ask how the proposed sample was packed and whether it represents the grade intended for production supply.

During commissioning, record rinsing and the initial outlet appearance separately from the adsorption trial. A clean-looking first sample does not establish sustained treatment performance. Keep subsequent water-quality records with the media identity and loading date so that a replacement decision can be traced to the actual filter duty.

Keep coconut-shell supply grade-specific

Record the approved grade, mesh distribution and required water-contact documents. Review changes to the carbon or filter design before treating a replacement as equivalent.
