Activated Carbon for Oil and Gas Processes

Specify the process stream and purification duty before comparing activated carbon for oil and gas applications.

Oil and Gas Processes — Application Overview

Refineries and gas-processing facilities use adsorption at different points in their process. Vapor treatment, liquid polishing and circulating-solution cleanup should be evaluated separately because their chemistry and operating conditions differ.

How Carbon Is Used

Activated carbon can adsorb selected contaminants from a gas or liquid stream. The relevant grade depends on the molecules present, operating pressure and temperature, and any pretreatment. Identify whether ordinary adsorption or a treated-carbon function is required.

Selection Priorities

Stream definition

Provide composition, target contaminants and whether the stream is gas or liquid.

Equipment fit

Match particle size and carbon form to the vessel, flow and allowable pressure drop.

Process compatibility

Review media chemistry, moisture and handling requirements with the process team.

Grade Parameters & Purchasing Brief

Identify the gas or liquid stream before specifying carbon. Include contaminants, pressure, temperature, flow and the position of the carbon bed within the process.

Industry Uses

Carbon beds perform different jobs across oil and gas facilities. The stream composition and equipment limits determine the media requirements.

Foire aux questions

Can one grade cover every refinery duty?

No single grade should be assumed suitable for all streams. Define the duty and compare the offered grade against the actual operating conditions.

What should I include in a sample request?

Send a process-stream analysis, operating range and current media data sheet. Include the intended outlet limits, trial arrangement and sample quantity.

Plan Your Carbon Evaluation

For a supply quotation, include the carbon duty, vessel charge, changeout schedule and destination. State any packing or handling constraints at the facility.
