GAC Particle Size and Pressure Drop: What a Water-Treatment Buyer Should Compare

Activated Carbon buying guide · Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

GAC particle size affects flow resistance, media retention and contact within a filter bed. Check the vessel, screens and operating flow before selecting a mesh range.

Match media and hydraulics

Give the supplier the vessel dimensions, operating flow and allowable pressure behavior. Ask for the agreed sieve distribution rather than relying only on a nominal mesh label. Check the compatibility of the range with underdrains, screens and the planned loading procedure.

Evaluate the complete bed

A useful comparison tracks outlet quality and pressure behavior during the same trial. Suspended solids and upstream filtration can also affect bed resistance, so do not attribute every pressure increase to carbon size. Record the actual operating stream and the maintenance conditions with the test result.

Éléments à consigner avant validation

  • Request a particle distribution with a named test method.
  • Check the vessel’s media-retention requirements.
  • Compare outlet performance and pressure behavior together.

Read the size distribution alongside the operating record

Two granular carbons carrying the same nominal size label can have different fine fractions and particle distributions. Request the offered grade data and compare samples under the same vessel, bed depth and flow conditions. Record the pressure measurement locations, loading method and the state of the upstream solids-removal stage.

A pressure rise during service may relate to deposited solids, loading or operating changes as well as media selection. Review inlet quality and maintenance records before assigning the cause to particle size. Preserve the original loading and commissioning record so later measurements can be interpreted against a meaningful baseline.

Specify GAC for the actual filter

Specify mesh distribution and vessel operating limits together. Record loading and commissioning observations so later performance changes can be traced to the media or filter operation.
