Activated Carbon Specifications: Why Iodine Value Alone Is Not Enough
An activated carbon specification sheet is useful only when the test results relate to the offered grade and the process you need to treat. Iodine value is one screening parameter; it does not describe every adsorption duty, mechanical property or operating condition.
Separate screening data from process performance
Adsorption takes place within a carbon’s pore structure. Different contaminants and water or gas conditions need different evaluation methods. A single number cannot describe contaminant competition, contact conditions or the point at which a bed needs replacing.
Before comparing supplier sheets, ask which test method produced each value, whether it is a typical figure or an agreed limit, and whether the document applies to the exact grade being offered.
Read the parameters as a set
| Paramètre | Why the buyer checks it | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Adsorption test result | Supports initial grade screening. | Which method, units and acceptance limits apply? |
| Particle size distribution | Affects media handling, bed behavior and powder dosing. | What sieve distribution or powder-size method is specified? |
| Hardness or abrasion | Helps assess handling and mechanical durability for relevant granular or pellet grades. | Which test is used, and does it suit this form? |
| Moisture and ash | Influence comparisons of delivered material and suitability for sensitive duties. | Are the limits and reporting basis stated? |
| Apparent density | Helps translate media mass into filling volume. | Does the value refer to the supplied condition? |
Water-treatment and gas-phase briefs are different
For a water-treatment grade, describe the target compound, feed water, flow and contact arrangement. Consider pH, temperature and competing dissolved matter. The EPA’s drinking-water technology guidance explains that GAC performance and design depend on the treatment objective.
For a gas-phase inquiry, include the gas composition, contaminant loading, humidity, temperature, airflow and allowable pressure drop. A pellet diameter or an adsorption screening result does not specify a complete VOC-control system.
Request documents for the offered grade
A technical data sheet describes the grade; a certificate of analysis, where provided, records the reported tests for a particular batch. Ask for the documents relevant to your order rather than treating a general brochure as batch evidence. Keep the agreed specification, sampling basis and acceptance method with the purchase record.
Build a useful sample trial
- Define the inlet and required outlet before testing.
- Use representative water or gas and the intended contact conditions.
- Record the dose or bed arrangement, duration and sampling method.
- Review adsorption performance together with handling and equipment constraints.
For bulk activated carbon procurement, a clearly defined trial is more useful than ranking grades by one headline value.
