When commissioning water-washed GAC, record the carbon batch, loading procedure, rinse flow and outlet quality. These readings help the plant team identify start-up fines, check the filter and decide when to begin normal operation.

Follow the applicable instructions

Follow the grade-specific wetting and rinsing instructions and the vessel manufacturer’s flow limits. Record the quantity loaded and each rinse stage. Carbon washed before delivery still needs the start-up procedure specified for the installed filter.

Create a baseline

Measure outlet quality and pressure drop at defined intervals. Retain a sample of the delivered carbon and its batch report. Persistent particles call for a check of the support screens, flow distribution and loading procedure.

What to record before approval

  • Record loading and start-up steps against the exact grade.
  • Observe outlet quality at defined commissioning stages.
  • Keep a baseline for later operating comparisons.

Use a commissioning log for washed GAC

Use one log for the batch number, loading date, carbon quantity, rinse stages and outlet readings. Record flow changes and interruptions beside the measurements. Set the release criteria before commissioning starts.

If outlet quality fails the release criteria, check whether particles are carbon fines or material from elsewhere in the system. Inspect media retainers and compare the operating flow with the vessel limits before repeating the rinse.

Separate washing from treatment acceptance

Keep start-up acceptance separate from adsorption performance. Rinsing records describe commissioning; contaminant measurements during service show how the bed performs under the treatment duty.
